The dumbest guy in the room #NovemberBlogFest

0

I consider myself a relatively smrt person. I like to learn new things all the time; especially when it comes to technology. I don’t like to feel like a dummy. Sure, there’s a bit of ego there driving me and pushing me to want to be knowledgeable.

Tonight I was the dumbest guy in the room.

I was fortunate enough to sit in a room and record the Church Tech Weekly podcast with Mike Sessler, Van Metschke, John David Boreing, Kevin Sanchez, Jason Cole and Dave Stagl. The cumulative amount of brain-power in that room was astonishing. I’m telling you, these dudes are ca-razy smart!! I was speechless most of the night and kinda just sat there and tried to soak it all in.

After we recorded the podcast, we all headed over to Saltgrass Steakhouse. Holy crap! That was the best Porterhouse I’ve ever had. The steak was great, but the discussion going around the table was even better. I got to hear story after story from these guys who have been doing this for years. And let me tell you, their stories are fantastic!

If I wasn’t before, I sure am now a firm believer that getting together with other like-minded people is so important. We could have sat there talking for several more hours if they didn’t kick us out. Plus, Dave and I have flights to catch in the morning. I am so looking forward to the next time when we will all be in the same room again. NAB anyone?

My Trip To Vegas

0

Okay, so I’m not really going to Vegas to gamble or party or even hit the buffets (although we are planning on hitting a buffet tonight). Instead I’m in Las Vegas for the NAB Show with my boss Mike Sessler (@mikesessler), Van Metschke (@thesoundbooth) and Kevin Sanchez (@sanchezkj).

The NAB Show is a trade show held in Las Vegas where manufacturers will be showing off some of their newest and coolest gear. Mike and Van have already laid out the plans on the different booths they want to hit up.

The main reason we are here is to record some live coverage of the show floor for Mike’s blog, Church Tech Arts, and will be featured in Church Tech Weekly.

I want to make a HUGE shout-out to DPA Microphones for sponsoring our trip so that we can cover the show.

I’m pretty excited to be a part of this and look forward to seeing what we can see in the next few days.

So if you’re interested in any of this, stay tuned to my twitter feed (@isaiahfranco) as well as Mike’s blog.

Also, here’s a few people worth following in the Twitterverse and who will be at the show:
Mike Sessler – @mikesessler
Van Metschke – @thesoundbooth
Kevin Sanchez – @sanchezkj
Duke DeJong – @dukedejong

Stay classy.

My Recording Experience

Recorded and mixed in Reaper

So here’s a quick sample of what I’ve been working on lately. For those who are curious, this was the song the Mike & Chelsea sang and played during their wedding ceremony. They wrote it themselves and I wanted them to be able to have a decent recording of it because I think it’s a special song.

For You

What’s the first thing you want to do when you get home?

1

An example of the Wild West influenced clothin...

I have no idea what I want to say. I’ve got a few ideas bouncing around in the ‘ole noggin, but I just couldn’t settle on one. Do I talk about what projects we have going on at Coast Hills? Do I write about how much I miss having a family? Or do I write about my constant struggle to be a “good Christian”?

The answer I came up with: none of the above.

Instead, I want to know what’s the first thing you want to do when you get home?

I’ll get the conversation going.

I would love to come home and kiss the wife and kid and talk about how each of our days went.

But since that’s not going to happen, I usually like to come home and try to unwind and decompress a bit. If I have some free time I might even get an episode of Battlestar Galactica in before bed (Thanks Ryan for getting me hooked on it. I hate you. Okay I take it back, loves you). I admit that I spend too much time Facebook-ing. Not that I would do something more productive if I spent less time on it though.

Sometimes I’ll just put a movie on and have it on in the background. If I do, it’s probably going to be Star Trek or Serenity.

The USS Enterprise in the 2009 Star Trek film

If any of my buddies are online, I might play a game or two of Team Fortress 2 or Starcraft 2.

But I really don’t have that much free time, so I don’t really get to do any of that stuff.
Which I think is probably a good thing.

So tell me…

While you’re driving in your car on your way home, what is it you’re thinking you want to do once you get there?

What I’m listening to right now

Since music with words distracts me while I’m typing I usually try to listen to instrumental pieces while I blog or anytime I have to do a lot of typing. Right now I am currently listening to some of John Williams‘ work. Just in case you didn’t know, he composed the score for Star Wars and many other great films.

There are a few other film scores/soundtracks in this playlist as well. Let’s see… I’ve got Transformers, The Matrix and Reloaded, Star Trek, Star Wars episodes I II III IV V & VI, Spiderman I & II, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and Serenity.

Music I Crank In The Car

2

I thought it might be cool to list some of the music I’ve been listening to, you know, so you can get an understanding of what makes me tick.
Or something like that.

“Because of Your Love” by Tim Hughes
I actually first heard this played by Mark Cullen during a worship service at Coast Hills. I really like it.

The Red Album by Weezer
I love this whole album. Especially “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”.

Break Build Shine by Matt Cash
Matt Cash is one of the worship leaders at Sandals Church and I love the emotion he puts into his music.

Hope Rising by Fee
Fee has some really great, up-beat songs that I love singing to in the car or when we sing them at church.

This Is Our God by Hillsong
I know Hillsong has a ton of really great songs. But this album has “Desert Song”, “Stronger” and “Healer”. ‘Nuff said.

And for kicks-n-giggles:
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture)
Pure awesomeness.

There are more, but that’s enough for now.
What kind of music do you crank up?
